The Inanna Project
My inspiration for this piece is the over 5,000 year old Sumerian myth The Descent of Inanna. First scribed by poetess Enheduanna, Inanna, Goddess of Heaven and Earth travels to the underworld to console her exiled sister Ereskigal, Goddess of the Great Below. In their struggle to co-exist, the two goddesses illustrate the necessary contradiction of light and dark within the feminine condition. Through this myth I am interested in unearthing the feminine divinity that has been largely forgotten, revealing new paradigms within a monotheistic, patriarchal culture. By mirroring this narrative, I thread our modern notions and experience of the feminine with the mythical and archetypal meanings of the Great Goddesses.
